The Running man
The running man (2025)
Camera Shots, Angles, Movements, Focus, and Framing Observations and the Meanings They Create
The movie
opens with a wide shot of a warehouse factory with sounds of construction and sparks
flying everywhere. In the reflection of the window the audience is looking through
our main characters face starts to appear, this introduces us to our main
character (Ben Richards). They used a shallow focus surrounding Richards face
to give the feeling that he is trapped, the use of low angles on Richards is
used to show him as being smaller than his boss due to their power indifference.
Close ups of Richards face help show his real emotion and help the audience
feel for him. The constant quick cuts to Richards sick baby helps the audience
to build sympathy and introduces the audience into part of the plot.
Editing/Sound Techniques
Fast and
quick jump cuts are used to help keep things quick and stressful. Back and
forth cuts between the boss and Richards shows the progression of Richards aggression.
The Use of sounds like the baby coughing to allude the audience to the motive
of this movie, and sounds of distant drones helps provide the audience with enough
information to make an inference on Richards family’s social status.
Mise-en-scène (Lighting, Costumes,
Setting, Props)
The use of
dim, fluorescent lighting that cast dark shadows within the environment makes
it feel gloomy, and rundown. Richards wears worn clothes which shows how he is
struggling financially, this plays a part in his decision in regards of the
main plot. The high quality clothes that the Boss wears helps the audience distinguish
the power gap between the boss and Richards. In addition the condition of his family’s
apartment with cluttered space, and visibly dirty helps tell the audience that Richards
life isn’t well of but instead struggling
to provide the proper care for his baby.

Awards/Nominations & Why Chosen
The Running
Man received mixed reviews, one side of the spectrum loves the movie while the
other hate it. It received nominations for the best science fiction film. I
chose this film because I feel that it depicts a very good representation of
what life in the future could look if some issues like, inequality and
surveillance continues to rise. I think the movie adapts the book well and
creates a fascinating/interesting thriller story.
